EGSA Diversity
The Diversity Committee of the Ecology Graduate Group (GGE) and Ecology Graduate Student Association (EGSA) is dedicated to increasing diversity in the (GGE) at UC Davis. The Diversity Committee became an official standing committee of the GGE in February 1998.
Currently there are few African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic/Latino-American, Filipino-American, Native American, or Pacific Islander faculty and students in Ecology. We believe there are many reasons to seek greater diversity.
- First, we are a public institution funded by the citizens of California and we have an obligation to serve those citizens, many of whom identify with one of the diverse groups listed above.
- Second, diverse students means diverse perspectives which enhances our ability as scientists.
- Third, it is important that leaders in Ecology represent all segments of society if environmental issues are to receive attention and widespread public support.
The Diversity Committee is convinced that with the commitment of the students, faculty, and GGE leadership, we can significantly increase student and faculty diversity in the GGE.
Committee Goals
- Encourage diversity applicants and increase the number of underrepresented students within each incoming class.
- Increase awareness of the importance of diversity within the GGE community and the ecological community at large.
- Organize diversity symposia and events at national conferences. For example, the Ecological Society of America has identified the lack of ethnic minorities in ecology as a major concern, thus a forum was planned for the 2000 ESA meeting. A symposium at the National Wildlife Society Conference in Austin, Texas, September 1999, was organized by Keith Miles, a member of the Diversity Committee.
- Target local colleges and universities that serve underrepresented students to provide information about the GGE.
Diversity Applicants to the Graduate Group in Ecology
The EGSA has recently put together an Admissions Survival Guide to assist prospective students through the application process. Written by students who have been through the UC Davis admissions process and have sat on admissions committees, this page is an important resource. It is highly recommended that interested applicants CHECK IT OUT! We suggest you get started on the application process months before the application due date; read through the Survival guide as early as September of the year the applications are due (the application deadline is December 1st each year).
There are Diversity Committee members that can assist you in the application process or who can answer questions about Davis or the GGE. Feel free to contact members of the Diversity Committee, formally or informally. We're a resource for you to use!! Let us know if you have comments or suggestions.
Students interested in visiting the campus, talking to prospective faculty advisers, graduate students in the GGE, and other members of the Davis and Ecology community are encouraged to do so at any time of the year. Visits for prospective students are encouraged early in the fall, to ensure sufficient time to use advice and information obtained during the visit in the application process. Limited funds are available through the GGE at this time to assist prospective students in visiting the campus, but we are interested in helping in any way we can. Housing can be arranged through students, for example. Please contact us for more information about the program and visiting us!
